Halloween: A Very Haunted House (Open/Main) Empty Halloween: A Very Haunted House (Open/Main)

There was no more sacred Halloween tradition in Lakeshore than that of Dr. Regenbogen's Haunted House, which sat on the border between Lakeshore and Arcadia, where the magic flowed freely and — more than occasionally — had erratic results.

There was one year the good doctor had the idea to do a zombie theme. It had seemed rather brilliant at the time — after all, zombies were all the rage back in the mundane world, what with all of the movies. But in practice... well, let's just say that he won't be doing zombies again anytime soon. There were rumors of him doing a Sharknado theme this year, but thankfully, it seems the logistics of getting that many sharks inside a building without causing damage to the sharks or the building were too difficult.

No, this year, the Dr. Regenboden's Haunted House is just that: a good, ol' fashion haunted house, with ghosts that pass through walls and make soft, haunting noises; paintings with eyes that follow you; flickering lights and candles that blow out at random; and every once in a while, the odd Headless Horseman riding through the hallways. (Frankly, the ghosts were probably having a little too much fun with this. They didn't get much chance for real haunting anymore.)

And, like always, his haunted houses were set up in a very interactive sort of way. Because once you've paid, once you've walked through the first doors, there's no way out but to find the exit. And with all of the secret passageways, doors with hidden keys, and puzzles, it wouldn't be an easy feat to find one's way out even without the ghosts and monsters lurking in the halls.

Tebryn shivered as he waited in line, stooping to wrap his arms around Daisy's waist. She was a foot shorter than he, and had the sense to wear a real jacket out on this chilly autumn night, so he was more mooching off of her body heat than protecting her from the breeze.

He rested his chin atop her head, twixt her antlers, and sighed through his nose. He loved coming to the haunted houses every year, and his Morticia Addams costume had fallen through anyway.

"Think they'll bring the Juicer back this year?"

Tebryn smirked. "I liked the Juicer. He gave out smoothies at the end of the night."

Hitoshi didn't hate Halloween. He didn't like the hokey parts of any holiday, and Halloween was exceptionally hokey. He hadn't bought into the costumes and candy aspect since he was young (and frequently got wrangled into wearing matching costumes with his sister and often Rudeth and Dmitry as well), and candy was a rather disappointing type of sweet when he was accustomed to delicate baked goods. Though it surprised most people outside his family, Hitoshi tended to favor Christmas and Thanksgiving over Halloween.

But Hitoshi did enjoy certain aspects of Halloween. Specifically, Hitoshi enjoyed the scary movies and haunted houses. Not because they scared him — Hitoshi was exceptionally difficult to frighten — but because he took a certain level of enjoyment in not being frightened by them. And for complaining about them, naturally.

"You say that like it was an intentional inclusion and not a problem with Dr. Regenbogen's faulty spellwork," Hitoshi deadpanned from just behind Tebryn.

He was dressed in dark, warm clothes that would be easy to run in. This wasn't Hitoshi's first rodeo, as his grandmother would say.

Tebryn felt more than heard Daisy snicker at the remark. He lifted his head and looked at Hitoshi, the shape of his eyes suggesting a grin.

"It was very amusing to hear the two of them bicker. And Dr. Regenbogen threatening to turn the Juicer into a quivering mass of biomolecular caviar as he threw him out of the building."

Daisy made a curious noise and peered around Tebryn's torso. "Does Regenbogen do the haunted houses every year?" She offered Hitoshi a sweet little smile. "Sorry, I just came over the border a while ago. I'm still learning my way around the bordertown."

Hitoshi grabbed a juice box from the snack table. The doors hadn't opened yet — they wouldn't for another ten minutes or so, mostly likely — so he decided to make the best of it.

"Dr. Regenbogen is one of the science teachers at Dunehelden. He likes to think of himself as a mad scientist." Hitoshi offered a pair of juice boxes to both Tebryn and Daisy. "He typically does them every year, though they don't always go so well. His ambition far overreaches the scope of the realistic."

Tebryn gave him a thankful nod and accepted the juice boxes. He poked a straw into one and handed it to Daisy, who kept her cheek against his chest as she sipped.

Tebryn sipped from his own box, eyes turning upwards to look over the decorations again. "I haven't had the chance to be in one of his classes yet. Have you, hyung?"

"I've been in a few of his science classes. I took biology with him, and a chemistry class. And I took a home ec class with him freshman year." Hitoshi wrinkled his nose. "It was... interesting. We made a few fully-functional robots out of gingerbread. Not to mention the gelatin incident — he made us all promise not to talk about that one."

Tebryn and Daisy looked at each other, eyebrows raising in an identical look of confusion, and turned to Hitoshi as they said in unison,

"What was the gelatin incident?"

"It came to life and overtook the classroom. Class was canceled for a week, but he made everyone promise to lay low and pretend that classes were still going on and not lead the headmistress know about it."

Hitoshi shrugged. "By the next Monday, it wasn't there anymore, and he never said any more about it, but I'm not convinced it's actually gone."
