En route to apology

((Continued from A hard knock and a gentle one.))
Rúna looked around the cafeteria, and sighed when she spotted Zaïren's bright green wings across the room. As she started toward him she also saw the snake, still wound tightly around his arm. Well, she should probably apologize to him too. It was a safe bet the snake was as intelligent as everyone else.
"Hallo," she said at last, stopping a few steps out of arm's reach of them. She wanted to keep her eyes on Zaïren, but the snake deserved her attention just as much, and she could practically feel his eyes on her. "I'm... sorry again about earlier. Didn't mean to scream right in your ear. I should probably have warned you I'm ophiophobic. Nothing personal," she said, more directly to the snake. "It's just something I picked up out in Asg-- Arcadia."

Zaïren sat gently petting Anguis' head. He hadn't seen Aye yet, and he actually rather liked having the snake nearby. Sure, it'd taken a little to get used to having something living wrapped around his neck and chest, but don't move suddenly, don't get too loud, and there was very little to worry about. No more than interacting with anything else with its own intentions and will.
He looked up at the feeling of someone nearby, and smiled faintly. "I forgive you. We all have our hangups. A bit of warning might have been nice... have you tried talking to anyone about it? What caused the fear, specifically?"

Rúna shook her head. "Not yet. It's a long story... kind of hard to explain. Might depend what myths you're familiar with."

Zaïren shrugged. "I have a bit of an overview on most of them. I know European ones better than I do anything else, and I'm no scholar."

Rúna nodded. "Well, if this means anything to you at all... I used to be a valkyrie. I served Odin and Brynhild for eight hundred years, until Loki stole my wings. Then they cast me out." Tears welled in her eyes, but she didn't let them fall. "He... Loki... took the form of a snake."

Zaïren shuddered violently and his wings pulled involuntarily as close to his back as possible. "Yeah, okay. Snake stealing wings sounds like a good reason to be afraid of snakes."

Rúna nodded again, her throat tight, and scuffed the floor with her toe. The snake on Zaïren's arm was being very quiet; she wondered whether he was listening at all, and what he had to say if he was.

Zaïren looked closely at the snake wrapped about his chest and smiled. "He's asleep, I think. He's got that unfocused look. But he's probably forgiven you. After all, he still got a warm spot to curl up and you didn't hurt him."

Rúna looked at him uncertainly. "Okay. I guess I should go, then... I still need to wash up. Do... you know who I should talk to about this? There has to be some kind of guidance counselor here, right?"

He smiled, tilting his head to the side thoughtfully. "But don't be a stranger, alright? Anguis is usually with Aye, after all."
