At The Mall - Pt 1

Post by Alex Matsuoka on Fri Jun 10, 2016 11:16 pm

Alex was not particularly excited about going to the mall, but he had to admit it was nice to be back in California. He'd only been to LA twice and this place was not one of them. As far as he was concerned, this was opportunity to people-watch and hang out with Hitomi and two cute boys. That was fine.

He leaned nonchalantly against a divider. Hitomi and Jaymie had split off to go see some fashion thing, so he was left with Hitoshi.

"So, where do you want to go?"

Hitoshi had never been to a human shopping mall. For that matter, Hitoshi had never been to the human world period, and he wasn't entirely sure how to feel about it. It was....different. People packed in densely to every corner of the shopping center.

And then there was Alex. Hitoshi had come mostly come because his sister had bribed him with talk of free food at some fancy French restaurant, then, like the traitor she was, she abandoned him to go to some fashion exhibit with her ex-boyfriend. Leaving him with Alex. Whom Hitoshi didn't know particularly well, but was at least better than throng of strangers around them.

Hitoshi was quiet for a moment at the question. He was used to either being dragged around by his family members or just going off wherever he felt like. This was new. "There should be a bookstore somewhere in the mall, shouldn't there?" he asked.

Alex took out his phone and glanced at the website. "Mm... yes. There's a Barnes & Noble in the K section, which is across the street." He pointed that direction. "Why the hell they can't just put it all in one building like a normal mall..."

He gave Hitoshi his best cute smile and ran his hand about an inch away from the other boy's arm. "Come on, let's see how lost we can get before they remember we exist. It's the least we can do to make them find us."

"I have...never actually been to a mall before," Hitoshi admitted. "I don't exactly have a frame of reference for what is actually normal in one. Are they always this crowded?" Then, more quietly, "Who even needs this many clothing stores?"

Hitoshi glanced over at Alex at the movement of his hand, but beyond that, he gave no reaction. Alex was...friendly. But not irritatingly so, like most of Hitomi's friends. And he knew Alex in passing from classes, enough to know that he was studious, and stronger in math than Hitoshi, if only by a hair.

"I suppose if nothing else it could be interesting to experience human culture head on," Hitoshi admitted. (If it occurred to him that openly saying phrases like 'human culture' in the middle of a shopping mall might be a bit ODD, Hitoshi didn't show it.) "And they did ditch us to look at some gaudy nonsense."

Hitoshi fell in step beside Alex, his eyes scanning the crowd. "This is... the epicenter of your youth culture, correct? You have movie theaters and restaurants and fountains that you throw minor currency into attempt to bribe the Gods of chance to grant you favors?"

Alex raised an eyebrow, the smile falling off his mouth. "I... was under the impression you were human? I understand you've never been, erm, out of your hometown before," he said in a quieter voice.

"They are very crowded, usually more than this. This place is a little too upscale to draw the really huge crowds... plus it's the middle of the day." Alex shrugged, feeling a little uncomfortable. He hadn't expected to have to play tour guide to someone from another culture, but in retrospect maybe he should have. "They were a lot more important in the 80s and 90s. Now people just buy things off Amazon."

He had absolutely no idea how to address the "gods of chance" thing, so he decided not to try.
