Sketching in the Shade Empty Sketching in the Shade

Jason reclined in the shade of a large beech tree, a sketchbook leaning against his legs. He frowned down at the page, then added a bit more green to the Joker's hair before sliding the colored pencil back into its box and pulling out a red one. He really should watch The Dark Knight again, he mused as he outlined the Joker's mouth. Or something Batman-related, at least.

Sketching in the Shade Empty Re: Sketching in the Shade

Post by Zaïren Fri Oct 02, 2015 2:34 pm

Zaïren had every intention of spending as much time outside as he could before it got too cold. Even if it was already cold enough he needed hot drinks to keep from turning blue. And he looked a little odd blue. There was too much green in his skin for the blue to work.

It seemed all the artists were feeling much the same way, except it was stiff fingers and not silly vanity that held their concern. Maybe if he asked nicely the young man he saw sketching would let him see. He seemed to be one of the few around the school who looked fully human. He made sure to stand out of the other's light. "Hello. Don't think I've seen you around here before."

Jason looked up at the greeting, and smiled at the young man who approached. Very pretty bird person of some sort. "Hallo. That's not surprising, I just enrolled this year. I'm Jason." He laid his sketchbook and pencils aside, then stood to offer the other a hand.

Zaïren swapped the cup to his other hand and shook Jason's. "Zaïren. Mind if I ask what brings you to Dunehelden? Most of the school tends to be pretty obvious. Not too many places someone like me could fit in."

He grinned and fluttered his wings slightly. "Here there's really no such thing as normal."

Jason grinned back. "So I see. I'm a lycanthrope. I was bitten when I was sixteen, but didn't find out about this place until this past summer." Those had been a rough couple of years.

Zaïren looked thoughtful. "I actually think I'm immune to that. I'm not human at all, so. But having to deal with that alone, or anyway without knowledgeable aid. Uff. Mind if I sit with you? I want to soak in as much outside as I can before the cold hits."

He shivered. "Surprisingly, blue and green are not very complimentary when they're your skin colors. At least on me they aren't."

"Ja, not pleasant. I'm hoping being here will give my family more time to wrap their heads around it, especially my father." Jason settled down under the tree again, and patted the ground beside him in invitation.

Zaïren settled beside him and curled up. "Was that your first introduction to magic? Because nothing says 'there is more in the world than is dreamt of in your philosophy' like sharp teeth on a full moon."

Jason laughed. "You're not wrong. Nothing like freaking out after gaining those teeth and jumping through a window, either. I've still got the scars." He wrinkled his nose.

"I would bet. I wouldn't know, I avoid broken glass. Especially windows. Can you imagine what trying to jump through glass would do to my wings?"

He shuddered violently. "You mentioned your father having the most issues with it? Now that I admit I can't imagine. Though, given my father was a humanoid swan, and I don't think I ever met him anyway, that's not terribly surprising."

Jason winced. "I'd rather not imagine that."

He nodded as Zaïren mentioned his father. "My family are all humans. Father loves reading about myths and legends, especially the Greek gods, but he never considered things like that could be real. To be fair, neither did I. But, the bite came right on the heels of my coming out as gay, so things are... strained, shall we say, right now. I'm hoping my mother and sisters can help him come to accept it, but it'll take however long it takes." He shrugged.

After a few seconds he flushed. "Ugh, listen to me, pouring out my life story and we've only known each other for a minute. I don't imagine you want to hear all that."

Zaïren grinned at him. "Hey, it's an interesting story. Besides, I don't meet too many full humans. I mean, I know a few, but not many."

So, the pretty one was gay. That was very interesting. "I could return the favor. I already mentioned I never met my father. Mom died when I was very young, about all I remember is she was a laurel dryad. Sort of like Ellie. I grew up in town, and a few of the other birds are my adopted siblings."

Zaïren shrugged. "I wasn't very old, so it wasn't really a big loss, for me. As for my family... Loud. You might have even met my brother Neylen. Or heard of him. You've almost definitely heard of him."

He shivered as a breeze swirled nearby and took on an expression that was a mix of childish whining and just tragic. "I am half evergreen why is the cold so miserable. Completely unfair!"

Jason nodded. "I think so. Some kind of red hawk, right?"

He laughed despite himself as Zaïren shivered. "That is unfair. I'd give you some of my immunity to cold if I could. It doesn't bother me at all since I became a lycan."

"Yeah, he's the red hawk."

"This green you see here? Jealousy. So much of it." Zaïren pointed at his skin. "Apparently plant and swan mixed in a way that made winter miserable. I have complained about it basically my first winter I could speak. Eventually people start threatening to gag me."

He grinned. "I have to make myself memorable somehow as something other than Neylen's brother."

"I become recognizable primarily by the ridiculous number of layers, definitely. 'See that amorphous lump shuffling through the snow with the huge cup of tea? Yeah, that's the plantbird.' Big cloaks and things to cover these things, and so many coats." He jerked a thumb over his shoulder.

Zaïren's eyes grew distant, though given the fact his eyes more closely resembled a swan's than a human's, it was a bit difficult to tell. "There's really no words to describe it. To an ordinary bird, it's just part of life, but it's... it's freedom. And always kind of scary. I imagine it's a lot like skydiving, except with a bit more control. I'm still working on learning some ability to control the air around me. My instinctive magic mostly involves plants. Encouraging healing and growth, that sort of thing. I can do a little bit for myself too, but it's easier to ask Ellie if I need healing."

"I don't know about fortune, but it does sound like something I could make a decent living at." Zaïren looked thoughtful. "Yeah, I could be pretty happy as a florist, I think. So what about you? You're here to learn about lycanthropy, right? Or just magic in general?"

Jason nodded. "That, and possibly getting an art degree if they offer it. I do a lot of commissions, portraits and such, and I figure this might be as good a place as any to hone my skills. I've loved making art since I was able to hold a crayon, so." He chuckled.

"Oh, there's all sorts of degrees here. I've not really looked into things yet, I probably should. It's not like I'll go to university anywhere else. If I bother going." He looked thoughtful. "Well, I guess business or something like that might not be a bad idea, if I want to be a florist.

"Are you going to try to learn any other magic? Anyone can, you know, if you actually try. Some people take longer than others, but that's true of anything."

Jason looked thoughtful. "I might. I haven't looked too far into it yet, but it is fascinating, and looks like it could be fun. Goodness knows what my father would say, though." He ran a hand through his hair. "I might have to keep it secret from him, and I'd hate to resort to that. Then again, if he accepts my lycanthropy with time, maybe it'll open him up to other things. Baby steps, you know."
