Scar tissue Empty Scar tissue

Post by Jaebi Lyckander Thu Oct 29, 2015 11:12 pm

Jaebi rubbed at the scars rimming his throat, old runes etched into his skin to negate the use of his human voice.  He had been conversing with Ellie-- or rather, writing notes while Ellie conversed, about a theory he had been ruminating on for a while.  The runes had taken away his voice.  Perhaps-- it was a slim chance, but perhaps-- healing the scars and removing the traces of each rune from his skin would allow him to speak again.  It had been so long since he had heard his own voice.  He missed being able to offer words of comfort or express joy, or even to sing. He so missed singing.

And now he was sitting at the foot of one of the pristine white cots in the infirmary, tracing his fingertips across the raised designs in his flesh, so familiar now that he could draw them blind.  His skin still tingled, moist from the herbal poultice the healer had applied to soften the scar tissue.

He looked to Ellie, brow furrowed, wondering if this would work.

If nothing else, he supposed, the scars would be gone.  But he longed to have a voice again.

Ellie stepped up to Jaebi, a warm smile on her lips as she dabbed a touch of cedar oil on each of the odd symbols rimming the tall lad's neck like a collar.  She tapped his chin gently, guiding his chin up so she could access his throat with more ease.

Her hands were already tingling with magic as she placed her palms against his skin, seeking the scar tissue piece by piece and easing it loose.  After several minutes of concentration she had made little headway, as the barriers twixt the runes and the epidermis seemed to shift and wrest to avoid her efforts.

Jaebi grimaced at the growing itch in his throat.  He tried to ignore the urge to clear it, shifting slightly in discomfort as he watched Ellie's brow knit slowly together.  Finally he could stand no more and pulled back, growling and coughing into this elbow to try and shake the itch.

He gave the healer an apologetic bob of his head and resumed his previous position, shoulders slumped and chin raised to offer his throat.

Ellie let Jaebi return to her on his own time. She gave his shoulder a reassuring pat before resting her hands on his neck once more. She reached out with her magic, more tentatively this time.

Once her power reached that of the scar tissue, red light filled Ellie's vision. It was a fraction of a second, just a moment of confusion, but it was followed by a sudden bolt of heat and a searing, mind-numbing pain. Ellie felt her hands burning and heard a ragged, high-pitched noise. It wasn't until she saw her palms glowing red with heat that she realized it was the sound of her own agonized screaming.

Vincent dropped his mug of tea in shock as a high-pitched scream erupted from behind the infirmary door he'd just passed. He spun around, gagging on the smell of burning wood and flesh, and burst into the room.

"Ellie?!" What was wrong with her hands?

Jaebi felt searing heat in the old runes in his skin, knew that the there were blisters forming, heard the yowl of pain that escaped him as Ellie wrenched away from him and toppled to the floor, burning hands curling against her bosom. Jaebi fought through the rising fog in his vision and dove forward, scooping up the healer and rushing her over to the sink. He supported her with one arm as he turned the water on, and tried to guide her hands to the stream. He barely noticed the sound of the door slamming open, but let out a strained mewl when he couldn't pry Ellie's arms out towards the sink.

Ellie was vaguely aware of a new presence in the room, and of being shifted to a new position. Her vision was growing dull, pain burning through her nerves and making her curl her forearms against her chest. She was seizing up, every muscle tensing as the rest of her skin grew barklike and her body began to shake.

Her eyes rolled back into her head. She was unconscious a moment later.

Vincent rushed to help Jaebi with Ellie, fighting to keep a lid on his panic. When Ellie fell unconscious, he took a deep, shuddering breath. He moved to plug the sink and let it fill, speaking to Jaebi in a somewhat strained voice. "You hold still. I'll get bandages for you both." Jaebi's neck looked horribly painful as well.

Vincent darted around the room, rummaging for bandages and submerging them in the cool water -- not cold, that would do more harm than good. Carefully he bound Ellie's hands and wrists in the damp cloth, watching her intently to see if she would wake.

Jaebi kept Ellie held securely in his arms, meowing in distress as her skin turned to bark and Vincent wrapped her burns. The cloth sizzled as it touched the wounds, and with the winding tendrils of steam and smoke came the heady scent of heated sap and juniper. Jaebi's head swam and he blinked away the tears that pricked the corners of his eyes.

He looked up at Vincent and let out a raspy whimper. He had no idea the old runes would react like this-- this was a vindictive magic, and now Ellie was in pain because he had asked her to interact with that magic, however unwittingly. He was aware of the raw, sharp pain in the runes at his throat, and knew he must be bleeding, but far more worrying was the new knowledge that the magic in his skin was far more active than he had previously thought.

Jaebi began to shiver.

Vincent looked at Jaebi when the young man whimpered, and winced when he saw him shiver. He still didn't have a clue what was going on here, but people were hurt and he had to help both of them somehow. He knotted another length of cloth in place and freed one hand for a moment to squeeze Jaebi's shoulder, hoping to comfort him. "It's going to be fine."

When he'd finished with Ellie's hands, which were soon thickly layered with cloth, he turned to Jaebi with another cloth in hand. "Hold still, I want to get that blood off you."

Jaebi sniffed and tilted his chin back, only now aware of just how bad his skin was stinging. The scars and the surrounding flesh were badly blistered, but seemed to be healing on their own. Rather, the scars themselves were untouched by the burns, and the skin around the marks was clearing, blisters deflating and burns fading fastest around the scars, progressing slower as they grew further from the collar of runes.

Jaebi's hands twitched at the itching sensation the healing presented.

Vincent blinked as Jaebi's neck began to heal on its own while he cleaned it, but counted it as a blessing. That was one less thing for him or Ellie to worry about. He dabbed the last of the blood away, then frowned. Were those runes cut into Jaebi's neck?

"What in all worlds have you been through, you poor boy?" he murmured half to himself.

Jaebi rubbed his nose against the back of his hand as he looked up at Vincent. W-i-z-e-n-e-d, he spelled out. Then added, Experiment.

Vincent read Jaebi's hands and shuddered. "Bastards."

He resisted the urge to ask more about that, and turned back to Ellie. He eased his hands under her to pick her up, trusting Jaebi to help if she was too heavy for him on his own.
